African and International Day of the Seas and Oceans
In Kribi, a strong call to protect our shared marine heritage
“Act together to protect the seas and oceans” was the theme of the African and International Day of the Seas and Oceans, marked in Cameroon on August 12, 2023, in Kribi.
The ceremony, chaired by a representative of the Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development, gathered local administrative and political authorities, community leaders and citizens. The objective was to raise public awareness about the vital role of oceans as sources of life across the globe.
The PAK’s commitment to ocean protection
Mr. SAADOU MOHAMADOU, Technical Adviser No. 2 and representative of the General Manager of the Kribi Autonomous Port, took the opportunity to emphasize the urgency of preserving oceans, which are increasingly threatened by human activity: pollution, overfishing, and climate change.
He reminded the audience that oceans are the blue lungs of the planet, producing most of the oxygen we breathe, and they are essential for food, medicine, and climate regulation.
“The Port will no longer be just a gateway for goods and marine products to the land, but also a way out of the threats facing the waters—through solutions coming from the land to the sea,” he said.
PAK as a driving force for sustainable development
By taking part in this national commemoration, the Kribi Autonomous Port reaffirms its strategic role in marine environmental protection, fully aligned with the Sustainable Development Goal 14: “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources.”
