Biodiversity and economic growth at the heart of International Forest Day

The Port Authority of Kribi hosted the 2026 International Day of Forests, highlighting the strategic role of forest resources in Cameroon’s economic development.

The Port Authority of Kribi embraced a natural setting on March 21, 2026, as it hosted the 14th edition of the International Day of Forests and Wildlife celebration. The esplanade of the Mboro industrial zone in Kribi provided the backdrop for this event dedicated to the synergy between biodiversity preservation and economic growth.

Held under the patronage of the Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Jules Doret Ndongo, the ceremony brought together a distinguished audience, including the Director General of the Port, Patrice Melom, as well as representatives from ANAFOR, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the European Union, alongside administrative and traditional authorities.

Under the theme “Forests and Economies,” the event took on the atmosphere of a vibrant exhibition, featuring stands from companies and organizations committed to environmental protection. The ceremony was further enhanced by a military display from the national forest guard, adding a sense of solemnity to the occasion.

In their remarks, speakers emphasized that timber is not merely a resource but a cornerstone of economic resilience. Patrice Melom highlighted the significant contribution of the forestry sector to non-oil exports and its role in value creation. With over 2.6 million tons exported through Kribi, including a growing share processed locally, the industrialization momentum is gaining ground, notably through the Kribi Port Industrial Zone (KPIZ).

For his part, Jules Doret Ndongo called for a balanced approach between exploitation and regeneration. He stressed the importance of local timber processing to create jobs for youth and increase national value addition, while reaffirming reforestation as a key pillar of sustainability.

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic tree-planting session within the port complex by the Minister and distinguished guests, reflecting a shared commitment to reforestation and sustainable resource management.

A tour of the exhibition stands followed, showcasing innovative initiatives from both local and international stakeholders, confirming that forest resource valorization is a key pillar of a green, inclusive, and sustainable economy.
