Sustainable Ports: The Port of Kribi at the Heart of Africa’s Environmental Challenges
From 28 to 30 May 2024, the Port Authority of Kribi took part in the AFRICA PORTS FORUM in Cotonou, contributing to discussions on sustainability and the green transition of African ports.
At the AFRICA PORTS FORUM 2024, the Port Authority of Kribi reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable port development by participating in a high-level panel dedicated to environmental imperatives and green solutions for African ports.
The panel entitled “Sustainable Ports: How to Address Environmental Imperatives”, held from 28 to 30 May 2024 in Cotonou as part of the AFRICA PORTS FORUM, provided a strategic platform for dialogue between financing institutions, public authorities and key stakeholders from the African port sector.
Discussions focused on the major environmental challenges facing African ports, including air and water pollution, waste management, biodiversity loss and the increasing impact of maritime traffic. In a global context driven by the energy transition and green growth, speakers emphasized the need for ports to adopt development models that balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility.
Several key levers were highlighted, such as integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into port operations, improving energy efficiency, promoting renewable energy solutions and deploying green technologies adapted to African realities. The importance of awareness-raising and the active involvement of the entire port ecosystem, including business partners and port users, was also underlined as a critical success factor.
The Port Authority of Kribi (PAK) played an active role in these exchanges through the contribution of Mr. Martial Thierry Nguele, Head of Concessioned and Authorized Activities. He shared the Port of Kribi’s vision and experience in terms of sustainability, stressing the importance of strengthened environmental governance, staff capacity building and enhanced cooperation with public and private partners.
Through its participation in the AFRICA PORTS FORUM 2024, the Port Authority of Kribi reaffirms its ambition to align with international standards for sustainable ports and to actively contribute to the ecological transformation of the African port sector, in support of inclusive and responsible growth.
