Maritime Safety Training: Risk Assessment at the Heart of Operations
Building Capacity for Safer and More Efficient Navigation
The Port Authority of Kribi held a maritime risk assessment training session with IALA to enhance navigational safety.
🚨 Partnership with IALA to promote safer navigation in Kribi
From 8 to 10 July 2025, the Port Authority of Kribi (PAK) hosted a technical training session on risk assessment using the SIRA model (Safety of Navigation Risk Assessment). This workshop was held in collaboration with IALA, the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities. It brought together 25 participants from PAK’s technical and operational departments with the shared goal of enhancing maritime safety awareness and practices.
🧠Theory meets practice: structured, hands-on learning
During the first two days, IALA experts led interactive theoretical sessions, including case studies, group work and simulations. Participants learned how to apply the SIRA methodology to :
-
Identify potential hazards,
-
Assess risks,
-
Propose tailored mitigation measures in the port of kribi’s context.
This structured framework helps integrate local realities like maritime traffic, buoyage systems, hydrographic conditions, and human factors into a comprehensive risk management strategy.
🌊 Field work and official closing Ceremony
On 10 July, on-site training took place at the port, in Mboro, where participants conducted a field study in order to observe and assess existing maritime safety measures and apply their newly acquired knowledge in real-life conditions.
The session concluded with a closing ceremony chaired by PAK’s General Manager, Mr Patrice MELOM, who commended the trainees and instructors. Participants received certificates of achievement, underlining PAK’s commitment to capacity-building and reinforced risk-management.
