Expertise and Safety at the Heart of Kribi’s Offshore Operations

On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the LNG carrier LNG CLEAN ENERGY safely docked at the HILLI EPISEYO Gas Terminal off Kribi. The operation showcased the expertise of Kribi Port pilots and the high safety standards in place for handling liquefied natural gas (LNG) operations.

Precision Maneuvering at Sea

Docking at the HILLI EPISEYO terminal requires specialized procedures due to the risks linked to LNG and the floating liquefaction unit (FLNG Hilli Episeyo) operated by Perenco.

  • Preparation: Coordination among port authorities, terminal operators, the ship’s captain, and Kribi Port pilots ensured all equipment and conditions—tugboats, fenders, mooring lines, and weather—were carefully assessed.

  • Approach and Docking: The LNG carrier reduced speed, embarked the pilot, and received tugboat assistance to align perfectly with the FLNG for safe mooring.

  • Loading and Departure: LNG loading was conducted under strict control, with tugs assisting the carrier for a secure departure from the terminal area.

Challenges and Safety Measures

Operations at the terminal require maximum safety due to LNG’s flammable nature. Strict protocols are followed, including ATEX compliance, spark prevention, and effective communication among pilots, ship captains, and terminal staff.

Versatile Pilots: Kribi Port pilots operate not only at the deep-water port but also at the gas terminal (Hilli Episeyo) and oil terminals (Ebome and Kone Kribi 1), highlighting their critical role in ensuring safe maritime operations in the region.
