Kribi Deep Sea Port Expansion Phase II Officially Launched
Major milestone achieved with the immersion of the first quay caisson by CHEC
On Saturday, October 22, 2022, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) carried out the launch into water of the first concrete caisson as part of the Phase II expansion works of the Kribi Deep Sea Port.
The official ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Transport, acting as the personal representative of the Prime Minister, Head of Government.
A strategic large-scale development
The Phase II project aims to double the port’s capacity with key developments, including:
-
A new storage yard and building zone covering approximately 560,000 m²;
-
5 ship-to-shore gantry cranes to enhance container handling;
-
15 RTG cranes and other mobile machines to optimize yard operations;
-
A total quay length of 715 meters, doubling the current linear capacity.
A key structural milestone
The concrete caissons are massive structures: 17 meters high, 21 meters long, 18 meters wide, each weighing over 2,600 tons. These caissons will form the base of the new quay walls and define the docking area for vessels.
This launch is not only a technical accomplishment but also a strategic step forward in establishing Kribi as a maritime and industrial hub in Central Africa, aligned with Cameroon’s development goals.
