An Experience at the Heart of Innovation and City-Port Dynamics

From March 8 to 13, 2025, the Port Authority of Kribi (PAK) conducted an immersion mission at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges International to explore technological innovations and the city-port dynamics that make this European logistics hub so successful.

This mission allowed the team to explore various topics related to the maritime and port sectors, as well as the interactions between the city and the port. Discussions also focused on industrialization and its integration within this constantly evolving ecosystem.

The Port of Antwerp stands out for its proactive approach, constantly striving to balance technological development, logistics, and urban planning.

Technology at the Core of Transformation

During this immersion, technological aspects captured the PAK team’s particular attention.

Discussions around artificial intelligence were especially enlightening, notably through the presentation of APICA (Assistant for Port Information and Control at Antwerp), an innovative solution acting as a digital twin of the port.

Designed to replicate human senses, APICA offers:

  • Hearing, by listening to VHF communications and capturing real-time exchanges among port actors;

  • Sight, through a network of smart cameras enabling continuous monitoring and detailed flow analysis;

  • Sensing, via multiple sensors measuring various environmental and operational parameters.

This advanced technology enables optimized operational coordination, enhancing safety, efficiency, and fluidity in port activities.

Strategic Reflection

Given these advances, one question arises:
Can technology, through coordinated data management, serve as an effective way to break down information silos within organizations and achieve higher overall performance?

A Learning Partnership

The Port Authority of Kribi warmly thanks the APEC teams for hosting this immersive experience, which provided valuable lessons and inspiration.

This mission underscores the importance of knowledge sharing and openness to innovation as key drivers for building modern, competitive, and sustainable ports of the future.
