Awareness Workshop on Fishing and Maritime Safety
A Shared Commitment to a Safer and More Sustainable Coastline
On January 20 and 21, 2025, the Harbour Master’s Office of the Port Authority of Kribi (PAK) organized a major awareness workshop on “The impact of fishing on the environment and maritime traffic safety” at Hôtel Le Lagon in Kribi. This initiative reflects PAK’s ongoing commitment to environmental and social responsibility, promoting harmonious coexistence between port operations and local communities.
Community Engagement Around Maritime Challenges
Led by the Harbour Master, Commander Bertrand Ndi Mendugena, the workshop brought together a diverse group of participants, including artisanal fishers, traditional leaders, community members from Kienké, and local authorities. The goal was to open a constructive dialogue on the environmental and safety challenges posed by fishing activities in maritime zones.
A Call for Collective Responsibility
In his opening remarks, the General Manager of the Port Authority of Kribi, Mr. Patrice Barthélémy Melom, emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining a safe and sustainable maritime environment. He reminded participants that the sea is a shared resource whose protection must involve all stakeholders—particularly in a region as strategically important as Kribi.
Informative and Participatory Exchanges
During the two-day session, experts raised awareness about the risks of unregulated fishing, such as maritime accidents, threats to biodiversity, and obstruction of navigational routes. Practical solutions were presented, including training on responsible practices and strict adherence to designated fishing zones.
A Renewed Commitment to Safety and Sustainability
This workshop strengthened the spirit of cooperation between the Port Authority of Kribi and local populations. It also reaffirmed PAK’s dedication to balancing port development with environmental protection and community inclusion. By working together, authorities, fishers, and local residents contribute to safer maritime spaces and the preservation of coastal ecosystems.
